The wheelwright display is part of the blacksmith’s operation and is housed in the side shed next to our working blacksmith’s shop.
There are many old wheelwright tools of trade on display, including a steel bending/tyre rolling machine. A hand-cranked machine used to form lengths of straight steel bars into curved or round lengths primarily used in wheelwrights/blacksmiths to form steel tyres to be fitted to wooden wheels.
There is also an upsetting/tyre shrinking machine used to ‘shrink’ iron tyres fitted to wooden wheels. It was used to re-set steel tyres that had become loose on the wooden wheel to the correct diameter so that they could be fitted on the wooden wheel tightly.
